4123-11 Blacksmith
Shaping bars, rods and blocks of metal by heating and hammering to produce or repair metal articles.
4123-11 Blacksmith Skill Level:
An AQF Certificate III or higher qualification is required.
4123-11 Blacksmith Tasks Include:
- studying drawings or specifications to determine job requirements
- selecting metal stock and heating it in forges
- observing the colour and temperature of metal in furnaces and removing and positioning metal on anvils or other working surfaces
- hammering, punching or cutting metal to size and shaping using hand tools or presses
- verifying the dimensions of forging visually and using measuring instruments
- forge-welds parts together by heating, applying flux and hammering
- annealing, tempering and hardening finished articles by heating and quenching in oil or water bath, or cooling gradually in air
- directing other workers to hold tools and assist in lifting and holding work pieces during hammering
- may be making and repairing agricultural or mining and quarrying machinery
- may be forging cold metal
