2129-15 Biomedical Engineer
Applying knowledge and methodology of physics, engineering, mathematics, computing, physical chemistry and materials science to problems in biology and the treatment and prevention of human disease.
2129-15 Biomedical Engineer Skill Level:
A bachelor degree or higher qualification is required. In some instances relevant experience is required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.
2129-15 Biomedical Engineer Tasks Include:
- developing new medical devices or instruments such as sensors and diagnostic or therapeutic devices
- using the principles of mechanics to analyse the musculoskeletal system and to design supportive devices to assist in the rehabilitation of patients
- advising on and developing equipment for the measurement of physical parameters affecting patients in intensive care or undergoing surgery
- exploring and developing the medical uses of ultrasound and electromagnetic radiation
- performing bio-electrical investigations of the heart and brain
- developing new materials and artificial organs for implantation
- researching the function and structure of living systems
- working with patients and other health care professionals to deliver services
