2127-13 Petroleum Engineer
Planning and directing the engineering aspects of locating and extracting petroleum and natural gas from the earth.
2127-13 Petroleum Engineer Skill Level:
A bachelor degree or higher qualification is required. In some instances relevant experience is required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.
2127-13 Petroleum Engineer Tasks Include:
- planning and conducting research and providing advice on engineering operations for the exploration, location and extraction of petroleum or natural gas
- determining locations for drilling
- deciding on types of derrick and equipment, including seabed platforms
- devising methods of controlling the flow of oil or gas from wells
- compiling logs recording production from flowing wells
- preparing plans of engineering operations and cost estimates
- providing necessary safety procedures and facilities
- consulting with geologists, geophysicists and other engineers on the location, design and development of extractive processes
- planning and implementing protection and restoration of the environment
