Studying the properties and uses of non-metallic materials and advising on the technical aspects of their manufacture and processing.

2119-19 Materials Scientist Skill Level:
A bachelor degree or higher qualification is required. In some instances relevant experience is required in addition to the formal qualification.

2119-19 Materials Scientist Tasks Include:
  • studying the properties of non-metallic materials such as ceramics, polymers and plastics, composite materials and rubbers
  • managing and performing laboratory investigations, testing and evaluations of materials and products
  • planning and undertaking experimental production of non-metallic materials
  • determining criteria for the selection of non-metallic materials, and establishing the requirements for protection against deterioration
  • consulting with other scientists and engineers on the development and production of non-metallic materials
