2113-17 Biochemist
Studying the biochemistry of living organisms.
2113-17 Biochemist Skill Level:
A bachelor degree or higher qualification is required. In some instances relevant experience is required in addition to the formal qualification.
2113-17 Biochemist Tasks Include:
- investigating the chemical structure and function of living cells, organs and tissues in humans, animals, plants or micro-organisms
- studying the chemical events involved in physiological processes
- isolating, identifying and assaying enzymes, hormones, metabolites and other substances produced by living cells or tissue
- investigating the roles of vitamins, hormones and minerals and the effects of toxic substances on physiological processes
- developing new and improved methods for the preparation of enzymes, serum and vaccines, hormones and other products derived from biological sources
- ascertaining and describing the biochemical reactions involved in fermentation, genetic technology, water purification, sewage treatment and other such processes
- preparing or supervising the preparation of laboratory reports and scientific papers
- may be developing industrial processes for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, foods, beverages and other products
- may be supervising the work of technical officers and technicians
